ACCOMMODATION

Has anyone tried the “Hostel Experience”? My parents who were Europeans and very used to hostels, had a hostel for 35 years. What fun I had as a little girl watching all these people coming to our home, cooking their own meals, playing games and having fun after a good day of biking, hiking or skiing. And my children loved watching cyclists arriving at their Grandma’s home.

I would totally recommend staying at a hostel! My husband and I have stayed at hostels across Canada and we were very comfortable and welcomed. It’s a family-type adventure. Why not book the whole hostel for 2 or 3 days and get a discount?

The hostel in Cumberland is very nice – Jeremy of Riding Fool Hostel said if we rented the hostel exclusively for $600 a day, if we filled it up with 30 people, everyone will only pay $20. You will be able to walk from the hostel to the Cumberland Rec. in just 5 – 10 minutes. Look them up at www.ridingfool.com or phone 1-888-313-3665.

There are 2 hostels in Courtenay that I would recommend.

  1. The Shantz Hostel is “elite” of hostels! It is just at the beginning of Cumberland Rd. in Courtenay so I’m sure it would take no more than 15 minutes to get to Cumberland. She told me if you rent the hostel exclusively, the group rate is $275. This hostel can accommodate 16. www.shantzhostel.com 250-703-2060
  2. The Cona Hostel is right across from the Filberg where we usually dance and I’m sure there will be a lot of Games activities going on at Filberg. It is nice also and situated at the bottom end of our Main 5th St. shopping area (Shantz is at the top of shopping street), so would only take an extra few minutes.www.theconahostel.com 250-331-0991 or 1 877-490-CONA

B & Bs - I am attaching a copy of accommodations in Cumberland from the tourist office/Chamber of Commerce. If you would like me to inspect any, please let me know. But with the internet and pictures, I’m sure you will get a good idea.

For more information about Cumberland: www.cumberlandbc.org. or phone the tourist office at 1-866-301-4636 or 250-336-8313. For more information about Courtenay/Comox: www.visitors-info.com

Camping: The campground is situated on Comox Lake, a popular place! It is 3 miles to downtown Cumberland, and anyone needing transportation they have a van to take you and I’m sure there will be volunteer drivers from our local square dance clubs. They have sites for dry camping at $24 and hook-up at $30. Look up www.holidaytrailsresorts.com or phone John and Judy Jones at 250-336-2144 or 336-8480.

The Host Society has arranged for free dry camping for self-contained RVs and campers in the lower parking lot of Comox Rec. Centre where we are dancing.
